Village Live is Five (Review)

Label co-founders Joey Deez & Remulak had long discussed the concept of creating

a compilation album in order to showcase the wide rage of styles that comprise the imprint's

eclectic output.

In May of this year, the pair decided that the time had come to put their vision into action

and began planning the compilation to be ready to celebrate the label's fifth anniversary

in December 2020. Sadly, just weeks after the decision had been made, Joey Deez

unexpectedly passed away. This compilation represents the last of the project

that Joey had planned, and was curated and executed with his tastes firmly in mind.

The album artwork also features the reworked label logo, which serves to mark a new chapter

in Village Live's existence.

A gigantic 21 tracks deep and featuring contributions from some of the best emcee's and producers which the UK has to offer, this is such a solid collection of varied styles, tastes and ideas woven together beautifully and with such care and attention.

Heavy breaks, lofi beats, dusty loops, yearning vocal samples, delicate piano chops, smooth, beautifully harmonised hooks and last but by no means least, superior levels of wordplay and effortless lyricism. Even with the length of the project there's still no real filler to be found - from the bass heavy, raw boom bap to delicate instrumental cuts there's something for everyone to enjoy and fall in love with. This is a lovely collection of tracks and a much better idea than a retrospective release to celebrate a milestone in the labels history, it gets me genuinely enthusiastic to see where they're headed going forward.

Put this on, play it loud, raise a glass to Joey and toast to a new chapter in the Village Live story.
